According to media reports, the landslide occurred on Sunday (August 21) at the shrine of Qatarat Al-Imam Ali, 28 kilometers away from Karbala city. The shrine is located in the desert. At that time, the roof broke and the shrine suffered extensive damage.
The country's fire brigade started a rescue operation after receiving information about the landslide. Locals joined them. They said that the death toll may increase as many people are still trapped under the rubble.
In a statement, the country's Ministry of Health said that six people have been rescued alive from the rubble so far. Many others are stranded. An operation is underway to rescue them.
Iraq's fire brigade said the landslide was initially believed to have been caused by humidity.
