Manure vs. Fertilizer: What's the Difference?
The fundamental differences between manure and fertilizer are as follows:
Manure is formed by dumping plant and animal wastes in open pits, whereas fertilizers are made by a chemical process in factories.
Fertilizer is a synthetic or industrially generated substance that provides plant nutrients, whereas manure is an organic component formed by the decomposition of plant or animal faeces.
Because manure is insoluble in water, it is absorbed by soil and plants, whereas fertilisers dissolve easily in water and are quickly absorbed by soil and plants.
Manure is not damaging to the soil and, in the long run, improves soil quality, whereas excessive fertiliser application can degrade soil quality and kill soil organisms.
Manure is inexpensive because it is made from decomposing plant and animal waste, but fertiliser is expensive since it is manufactured in factories by machines.
