Here are some answers to the most common questions we get:
Should I worry? Have I got ADD? How do they differ?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is what ADHD stands for. Attention Deficit Disorder is what ADD stands for. This term is no longer used, so if someone thinks they have ADD, they should say they have ADHD instead. We are talking about the same thing, though.
Kinds of Online ADHD Coaching
There are three different kinds of ADHD.
- ADHD Inattentive Type: A person has trouble paying attention, staying on task, and getting things done.
- ADHD Hyperactive Type: a person is very active (think: bouncing off the walls, always talking, interrupting, impulsive)
- ADHD combined type: a person who has both hyperactivity and inattention.
How can I tell if I’m Online ADHD Coaching?
If a psychologist or psychiatrist has not given you a formal ADHD diagnosis, we will start there. Your provider will ask you about your health, social life, mental health, and education. It will help us figure out when the symptoms began. We will also try to figure out where in your life (home, school/work, social life) your symptoms cause you the most trouble. For kids, getting information from a key teacher at school is part of taking history, since it usually affects how they act at school.
Even if I do not have ADHD, will online executive function coaching help me?
Executive functions are hard for a lot of people. This is a general term, but it means:
- planning
- organizing
- time management
- decision making
- Changing things up
- impulse control
Many people have trouble with these problems, especially when they are learning or working remotely, where there are a lot of distractions. If you can’t figure out how to make a system that works for you, online ADHD coaching can help.
Online ADHD Coaching for Teens
We love working with kids in their tweens and teens! For tweens and teens who have ADHD or problems with their executive functions, we focus on teaching them how to pay attention in class (virtual classes are even harder), while doing homework, and when making a study plan for homework and tests that works. Also, if we need to, we could work on bad habits.
Kids with ADHD also often have problems with anxiety. If this makes your child’s life hard, it may be a focus of treatment.
Depression can also be a problem for a child with ADHD. They may not be confident in how well they do in school or feel bad about not being able to reach their full potential.
