There’s good news for those applying for Skilled Migration Visa in Australia, especially those who are looking to migrate to the southern regions of the country. The final allocation to South Australia for the General Skilled Migration Program is 8,000 places: with 2,700 allocated to the Skilled Nomination (Permanent) Visa (subclass 190), and 5,300 to the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491). In addition, under the separate Business Innovation and Investment Program Visa (subclass 188), South Australia has been allocated 70 places.
State nominated visas allow states to nominate highly skilled migrants to meet local needs. A nomination by South Australia for the subclass 190 and 491 visas will provide additional points towards applications boosting their chances of securing a visa. Applicants with backgrounds in ‘in-demand’ industries, such as Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Health and ICT, amongst others, will be prioritised.
The subclass 190 visa is points based and allows skilled workers to live and work in South Australia as a permanent resident.
The subclass 491 visa allows skilled migrants to live and work in South Australia for up to five years, and can provide a path towards permanent residence.
The subclass 188 visa is a provisional visa and allows those nominated by the South Australian government to stay up to five years, under the ‘Business Innovation’ and ‘Investor’ stream, provided they meet the requirements thereunder.
Under the leadership of the Albanese government, the Department of Home Affairs planning levels for allocations to the State/Territory nominated visas increased to 31,000, nearly 20,000 over the previous year.
The increase to the State/Territory nominated visas reflects the Albanese Government’s decisions to provide greater opportunities to skilled professionals and reduce over-reliance on temporary labour. This will allow the Government to meet increased demand for skilled labour, while benefiting migrants looking to settle down in Australia for longer periods.
