In earlier centuries, nursing care was usually provided by volunteers who had little or no education—most often men and women of various religious orders. During the Crusades, for example, some military knightly orders, especially the Hospitallers, provided nursing care. Towards the end of the 18th century,
nursing was considered an unsuitable profession for “proper” young women, no doubt because the hospitals of the time were filthy and pestilential places where patients usually died.
