Tips to Fix a Faulty Lock
If you have a problem with a lock at home it can stop you in your tracks. It's a problem that can't be ignored and a speedy resolution is usually a must. Calling a locksmith straight away is usually best but if that is not possible, here are some other options to try.

Tip to Fix a Faulty Lock

When your key gets stuck in the lock, breaks in the lock or the key won’t turn in the lock most people will get straight on the phone and call for the help of a locksmith. This is usually the best course of action but in some cases, the problem can be solved by following the simple guide below.

1.       The key has broken inside the lock

Don’t try to lock or unlock the door further with the broken piece of the key as you may end up forcing it further into the locking mechanism. This will make it more difficult to retrieve. If you can see the end of the broken key you can use very fine, needle-nosed pliers to reach into the keyhole, grasp the end of the broken key and pull it out. If the key doesn’t come out easily, give up at this stage and call for the help of a trained locksmith. Otherwise, you may end up causing further damage to the lock.

1.       The lock is difficult to open

Over time, a build-up of dirt and dust can sometimes clog up the internal workings of the lock making it difficult to turn. You can try applying some graphite spray or silicone-based lubricant inside the lock. After applying, leave it for a couple of minutes and then put the key back in and try turning it a few times.

2.       The lock on a UPVC door is stiff and difficult to lock and unlock

Poor alignment of the locking points is a common problem with UPVC doors and it is a problem that gradually gets worse over time. A sign that this has happened is if the door can be locked /unlocked easily while in the open position, but not when the door is closed. Unfortunately, this is not something that most people will have the skills to deal with. However it is usually a quick fix for a trained locksmith who will be able to adjust the door so that the locking points are aligned properly. The other scenario is where there are problems with the locking mechanism even when the door is open. This could indicate a faulty lock which would require new parts fitted by a locksmith.

3.       The key is difficult to insert into the lock

Sometimes this type of problem is caused by a poorly cut key. A key that is not accurately cut will always cause problems. That is why using a reputable locksmith for any key cutting is essential. If you have another key for the lock, try it in the lock so that you can determine if it is a problem with the lock or the key. If it is a problem with the lock a locksmith will need to investigate the problem further.
