Uterine Fibroid Treatment With Uterine Fibroid Embolization

A minimally invasive technique UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) is employed to shrink the non-cancerous vascular fibroids by using a catheter-based incision. This procedure is considered as one of the best minimally invasive techniques for the uterine fibroids treatment. This involves the deprival of blood majorly from the urinary artery, causing the blood supply to block. This process requires a minimal surgical procedure and only a short recovery time.

What are Uterine Fibroids?

Fibroids are one of the abnormalities that originated from unknown spots in the reproductive tract of women. Females with improper functioning of the vascular system and suffering from hypertension or cardiovascular atherosclerosis diseases are more often reported for the presence of one or more uterine fibroids. The uterine fibroids are classified into 4 categories as mentioned below;

Intramural fibroids

Subserosal fibroids

Pedunculated fibroids

Submucosal fibroids

Causes of Uterine Fibroids?

Different genetic and hormonal changes in the human body are suspected to be the prime causes of uterine fibroids. Some of the of vascular fibroids are;

Estrogen

Progesterone

Growth hormones

Genetics

Misplaced cells

Early age periods

Obesity

Vitamin D deficiency

Alcohol consumption

Stress like miscarriage or first birth can also lead to the development of fibroids.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization

There are two major medical recommendations in response to the treatment of uterine fibroids. One is medication and the other is a non-pharmacological approach to uterus surgery called uterine fibroid embolization or uterine artery embolization (UAE). UFE is performed by interventional radiologists experienced in treating vascular diseases. Uterine fibroids are of many types, some varying in their sizes while some are based on their location of existence. These are divided into 4 classes:

Submucosal Fibroids

Tumors that grow within the uterine cavity

Subserosal Fibroids

Tumors that grow outside the uterus

Intramural Fibroids

Tumours that grow within the muscular walls of the uterus

Pedunculated Fibroids

Unlike other three that grow within the tissue, these develop on stalk-like structures that come out from tissues in form of mushrooms.

Uterine Fibroid Treatment

Uterine fibroid treatment done with UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) has proven to be quite effective in many women having fibroids in their uterus. Some can get rid of these benign tumours with simple medication while others need follow-up treatments. It is reported that about 3 in every 4 women got relief from vascular fibroids by UFE. Similarly, 1 out of every 5 women is also found to have undergone a second UFE treatment. .

UFE method in vascular surgeries is a short or overnight hospital stay with less blood transfusion.
