Hypospadias
Hypospadias is a condition that can lead to issues later in life such as having to sit to pee or having difficulty having intercourse. This is why it is recommended that if a child is suffering from this condition, he receive the necessary treatment.
Cause of Hypospadias
There are currently no studies that point to the exact cause of hypospadias. According to what is known, hypospadias runs in families. Children with hypospadias are slightly more likely to have fathers and brothers with the same disorder.
Researchers have discovered that this condition is caused by a problem that occurs during pregnancy. Around the eighth week of pregnancy, the penis begins to develop. The urethra defect occurs between weeks 9 and 12.
Aside from this, certain factors in the mother can increase the risk of a baby developing hypospadias, including:
- Obesity or carrying extra weight
- Age over 35 years
- The use of fertility treatment to get pregnant. This could be due to the possible exposure to progesterone, which is a hormone used during fertilization
- Use of other hormones before or during pregnancy
- Exposure to pesticides
- Smoking
Symptoms of Hypospadias
Hypospadias can cause a variety of symptoms in children, including:
- The downward curving of a penis is referred to as a chorddee.
- Testicles that haven't descended: One of the testicles does not fully descend into the scrotum.
- Foreskin that hasn't developed: The skin covering the head of the penis does not fully develop. This is why babies with hypospadias should not be circumcised.
- Urination that is abnormal: Urine does not flow in a straight line.
