How does the spin work?

Spinning is the process that the washing machine goes through and that serves to reduce the humidity in the garments. How? Thanks to the turns or revolutions per minute (rpm) at which the drum rotates separating the water from the fabric. The more turns, the less moisture.

In this way, the washing machines have a different type of spin depending on the rpm:

600 rpm : designed to remove 20% of the humidity

800 rpm : removes 40% of the humidity

from 1000 to 1300 rpm : they remove between 50 and 60% of the humidity

1400 rpm : removes just over 60% of the moisture leaving it almost dry

However, also keep in mind that the higher the revolutions, the more your clothes can be damaged since they can deteriorate in less time. In fact, many fabrics such as silk or lace are recommended, apart from washing them in cold water, not letting them spin.

What do I do if my washing machine does not spin?

First of all, we must identify the cause why it does not spin well. These causes may be due to the following:

1. Poorly connected connection cable

If this connection cable is not properly connected to electricity, the washing machine will not receive the power it needs to work properly.

2. Clogged drain pipe

Check that the drain pipe is in perfect condition and above all, that it is not clogged , otherwise you will have to clean the remains of dirt so that the washing machine can continue with its work. And if it is worn, deteriorated, bent or has any perforation , you must change it for a new one or else it can also affect the washing or rinsing cycles.

3. Engine faults

In most cases, if the washing machine does not spin correctly and also gives off an unpleasant odor that triggers your alerts, it is probably because the motor has burned out . In this case, disconnect the washing machine from the electrical current and the most recommended and correct thing in this case would be to change the washing machine and buy a new one, since it will be cheaper than fixing it.

4. Bad water pump

If it is in poor condition , it will not be able to expel the water correctly through the drain pipe, therefore, check it and if it is damaged, consult  the specialist technician.

Some of the error codes that may appear on the display (if your washing machine has one) are:

Error A:18 → It means that one of these three elements, the pump, the hose or the tube, is clogged and cleaning is necessary.

Error E:23 → It means that the pump is damaged and therefore the washing machine is full of water. In this case, close the water intake and call the technical service .

5. Condenser problems

Modern washing machines no longer have a starting capacitor but brushes, although both fulfill the same function, which is to give the motor the necessary force to turn so fast. To find out if it is a problem with the condenser, put the washing machine on any program without clothes inside and if it makes a noise as if it is spinning then something is wrong with the condenser .

If you think the problem is the condenser, you can follow these steps to remove it:

Unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet

remove the lid

Locate the condenser , remember that new washing machines do not have it. The condenser is a white cylindrical plastic object that has two ends, one connected to the washing machine and the other to the cables of the washing machine.

Disconnect the cables , but first take a photo so that you can connect them later in the same way

The easiest thing is to take it to a spare parts store and get the same one to be able to change it.

Put it all back and try the washing machine

In any case, it is best to call a specialized technician who can diagnose the condition of your condenser.

6. Brush wear

Newer washing machines do not conduct electrical power to the motor through a condenser, but rather through graphite brushes that wear down in a similar way to a pencil.

The brushes are usually between 3 and 4 centimeters, but when worn they can end up being up to 0.5 cm. In that case, the washing machine will not have enough force to spin. The problem is solved by replacing the brushes and although it is not an extremely difficult job, it is more complex than changing the capacitor, therefore, it is better to have it done by a professional.

7. Timing belt wear

The timing belt of the washing machine is the one that allows the rotating movement with which the clothes move inside the drum. If it wears out, your washing machine probably not only won't spin, but won't wash normally either.

8. Heavy loaded drum

If your washing machine spins slowly or only sometimes this could be due to the load in the drum. If we put more clothes than indicated or if we fill it with bedding, duvets or rugs , this will make it difficult to spin.

If your washing machine allows it, pause the spin, open the door and distribute the clothes so that they are not clumped in one place, if it still does not spin correctly, the ideal thing would be to remove clothes.

Mention that this can be solved with Balay washing machines that have a 3G Sensor that serves to correct load imbalances keeping it centered.

9. Underloaded drum

If the drum does not contain enough clothes and the revolutions per minute (rpm) are very high, we will be wasting energy because there would be an excess of speed for few clothes so, in some programs, the washing machine may not spin correctly.

10. Make sure you have chosen the right program

Sometimes and in a hurry we can select a different program such as the anti-wrinkle programs that are disconnected just when it reaches the spin cycle so that your clothes do not come out wrinkled.

11. Possible electronic problem

In some cases, if any of the programs does not work, surely there is a problem with the programmer, that is, the electromechanical system that allows us to manage the washing programs. If the programmer does not work correctly, it may be due to a fault in a sensor, communication, control system, etc.

If that is the problem, it is best to call a technician as it may need to be replaced or reprogrammed.
