Ways to conduct an excellent speech
This paper discussed two examples of speech devoted to the topic of Chili peppers. The analysis of the both verbal and non-verbal aspects was conducted based on the theoretical background outlined in the book Cengage Advantage Series: Essentials of Public Speaking (2014) by Cheryl Hamilton. The difference between the two speeches was highlighted in terms of formality/informality. The conclusion was drawn based on the evidence presented in the paper.

Speech Analysis

The two videos related to the topic of Chili peppers and their benefits are drastically different in terms of both presentation and structure of the speech. It is obvious from the introductory sentence that the second presentation is delivered with more confidence and the speaker practiced before delivering the speech.

There are a number of verbal as well as non-verbal aspects that distinguish one speech from another, which also leads to a conclusion that the second speech is more professional.

1. Verbal Aspects

· While the first speech is stylistically neutral with the extensive use of colloquial phrases, the second one starts with a story telling, which is characterized by utilizing various stylistic devises such as hyperbolas, metaphors, metonymy, alliteration, etc. These are the best tools that enable the speaker to engage his audience from the beginning.

· The second speech also contains a brief introduction of the topic and the points to be discussed, which prepares the listeners for the information processing and keeps them focused.

· During the second presentation, the speaker pauses to summarize the information covered and proceeds with introducing new points related to the topic.

· The second speech is also marked by the use of personal pronouns and rhetoric questions, which diversifies his speech. The first speech seems more monotonous.

· The number of colloquialisms and professionalisms also differs in the two examples. Thus, the first speech is characterized by the use of colloquial words and just a few technical terms of botany. The second speech includes a variety of professionalisms as well as the words of high register and just a couple of colloquial phrases.

· Apart from linguistic material, the second speech also seems more professional due to the excellence in speaking achieved by practice (the speaker does not look at his notes as often as in the first speech). Therefore, information is digested more naturally without distracting pauses which usually discourage listeners from paying attention to the information being delivered.

2. Non-verbal aspects

· There is more eye contact with the target audience in the second video.

· The visual materials are also more sophisticated than in the first presentation. In addition, the speaker points to the visual images in order to support his verbal message.

· The fact that the second speech is more professional is highlighted by the style of the speaker's attire (casual/formal).

Taking into consideration both verbal and non-verbal aspects of the speeches under investigation, it is possible to conclude that the first speech is less professional for a number of reasons: linguistic material (structure of the spoken text, stylistic coloring of the lexemes used, register, and the textual modality; non-verbal language (gestures, visual materials, clothing and postures).
