Government objects to WHO estimates of 47 lakh Covid-19 related death
The Government of India has objected to the World Health Organisation (WHO) report which estimates 47 lakh deaths in India linked to covid-19 in 2020 and 2021.
As of 31 December 2021 the government of India reported 481,000 covid-19 related deaths. The WHO has included data till 31 December 2021.
The WHO has released the new “excess death figure” based on a mathematical model taking into account the difference between the total number of deaths that have occurred and the number of deaths that would have been expected in the absence of the covid-19 pandemic.
The WHO data suggests that covid-19 related excess death in the world was 15 million and maximum excess death was in India with 4.7 million death followed by Russia 1.07 million death, Indonesia 1,03 million, United States 0.93 million.
How has WHO calculated excess death
- Excess mortality includes deaths attributable directly to covid-19 that were counted and reported to WHO by countries.
- It also includes deaths attributable directly to covid-19 that were not counted or reported by countries.
- It also includes deaths indirectly associated with covid-19 due to other causes and diseases, resulting from the wider impact of the pandemic on health systems and society.
Objection by the Government of India
Government of India has objected to the data related by WHO on the following points;
- Mathematical projections are unnecessary since India has a robust civil registration system data which record birth and death in India
- some of the source data was obtained from media reports;
- a base used for calculations was itself an estimation and “ignored actual data”; and
- there were flaws in WHO’s assumptions about how disease spread across the country.
1 million = 10 lakhs
